Religious Education
At Nunthorpe we aim to equip children with the knowledge, understanding, tolerance and empathy to live and be educated in an increasingly multicultural and multi-faith society.
We want to celebrate culture and diversity and we recognise that for many people in our community, religion is a crucial part of their identity. Children growing up today need an awareness and understanding of religion as it is developing in Britain. We want our Religious Education to provide opportunities to encourage respect for others, to challenge stereotypes and to build an understanding of cultures and beliefs that may be different to our own.
Our beliefs inform our values and what we say and how we behave. Our RE curriculum promotes a positive and inclusive school that values democracy and human rights. By using challenging questions. we encourage pupils to explore their own beliefs, to develop their respect and understanding for others and their rights and responsibilities to society.
Our teaching of RE makes a unique contribution to the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils and supports wider community cohesion.
Our RE curriculum develops pupils’ knowledge and understanding of Christianity, other principal religions (particularly those represented in our school community), and religious traditions, fostering personal reflection and spiritual development. We encourage pupils to explore their own beliefs and develop the knowledge and understanding to build resilience to anti-democratic or extremist narratives. We enable pupils to build their sense of identity and belonging, which helps them flourish within their communities and as citizens in a diverse society and teach pupils to develop respect for others, including people with different faiths and beliefs, and helps to challenge prejudice.
Our children study two RE units per year in Y1-Y6. These units have been carefully selected so that all pupils’ religions in our school are learnt about and celebrated. To see Redcar & Cleveland Agreed RE Syllabus click here.
