À Nunthorpe, nous apprenons le français dans deuxième étape clé.
(At Nunthorpe we learn French in Key Stage Two.)
Studying a language in primary school provides children with essential life skills. As well as giving them the opportunity to learn another language, it helps to promote a wider intercultural understanding. At Nunthorpe, we study French in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6.
Our aim is to develop a passion and curiosity in each child about the language they are learning. We want them to be confident about their language learning abilities so that will feel willing and able to continue studying languages beyond Key Stage 2.
We will help them develop and demonstrate substantial progress in the 5 key language skills necessary for learning French: speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar. We will extend their knowledge of how language works and explore the similarities and differences between French and English.
Our teaching of French enables pupils to begin to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It provides opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes in French. This provides the foundation for learning further languages in their secondary education.
Teaching and Learning in French
Teachers plan their lessons using the Twinkl scheme of work and resources, and will supplement this with their own ideas and experience and those of their colleagues. Each year group will follow two themed units of work with 6 lessons in each unit designed to motivate, captivate and interest children from the first moment. Lessons will cover all five language skills and will have clear, achievable objectives. They will also provide for different learning styles using e.g. interactive teaching materials and games, songs, rhymes and raps and written activities. SEND children have access to the curriculum through variation of task, grouping or support from an adult.
You can view our Long Term Plan for French below. While our younger pupils are exposed to the different cultures and traditions of other countries, French as a language is only taught in Key Stage 2.
